Suggest Treatment For Cold, Running Nose And Ear Problems

My grandson is 3 yrs. old. when he is having a cold or just running nose, his mother is constantly making him blow his nose so hard that I want to tell her that it may affect his ears. He already had tubes put on when he was 2. He was having problems pronouncing letters and words, so she took him to a ENT doctor. They did surgery on his right ear cause he couldn t hear at all & put tubes on both ears. The right ear tubes came out by themselves. Could blowing his nose real hard have an affect to whats still going on with still pronouncing words clearly?

Hi,

Repeated forceful blowing is not good- this can cause undue stress on eustachian tube, leading to its dysfunction and resulting in recurrent ear infection(otitis media). Also, forceful blows may push bacteria from nose or pharynx to middle ear.

This may cause damage to blood vessels and mucosa of nostrils resulting in nose bleeds.

Most of the cold in children are caused by viruses, and need only symptomatic treatment with antihistamines and nasal decongestants. Only cases with high grade fever beyond 3 days, or with purulent(yellow) nasal discharge needs antibiotics.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam TK
