Hello - I have had a cold for a week and lost my voice yesterday. I have bright yellow phlegm that only really comes out when I inhale steam and my throat feels coated. I am not using my voice and I had a cough and sore throat. Today the soarness in decreased, cough not really there and phlegm is still stuck. My question is if phlegm can be viral. It is hard to find doctortcare on a Saturday where I am, but I need my voice a lot next week and if prescribed medicinecould help I should be on them.
Phlegm due to bacterial infection. First, it may start like viral infection then followed by infected with bacteria. So use luke warm salt water gargling thrice a day for five days. Avoid cool drinks and ice creams. Use tablet Amoxicillin and Clauvulinic acid 625 (if you're not allergic) for five days. If symptoms have not improved, please get a chest X-ray AP view and sputum culture and sensitivity. Review with reports and consult with your physician he will examine and treat you accordingly.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
