Suggest Treatment For Clostridium Difficile Colitis

Yes! I am a care giver for a 84 year old Lady is has been hospitalized with "C diff". How long is she
contagious & what are my risk in caring for her? I am extremely careful about washing everything! I also, use bleach mixture on most things she has or will come in contact with.
Do you have any other advise or suggestions for me to help her condition improve, get healthy once again
and prevent future bouts?
Thanks you for your time, Sharon

Welcome to healthcaremagic.com. I applaud your concern to stop spread of Clostridium Diffecile and have good care for your patient.
1. C.Diff is treated with Flagyl on the first episode and then with flagyl for the second episode and then Oral Vancomycin for subsequent event. Now this is for non serious infections without hypotension/low blood pressure of sepsis/profound blood infection.
2. Wear gloves when attending to her.
3. To help stop the spread of C.Diff one needs to wash their hands with soap and water every time, hand sanitizers do NOT help. The spores of the C.Diff have to be washed off.
4. Washing down (bleach does not hurt) her utensils and food surfaces is key and will prevent re-infection with the spores.
5. Many thoughts out there says that probiotics/yogurt will help repopulate normal flora and lessen the course of the disease/infection.
I hope that this helps you out, good luck and thank you for your question.
