Suggest Treatment For Chronic Small Vessel Ischemic Disease

My father had an MRI earlier in the year and was diagnosed with moderate chronic small vessel ischemic disease and pronounced diffuse cerebral atrophy. My sister was with him but doesn t feel like this was explained to her and my father thoroughly. Could this be the reason for his forgetfulness and not paying bills for the last four months, losing interest in hobbies that he once had, overall confusion and missing appointments? He was also given Aricept but refuses to take it. I live in the Eastern US and they live out West. Just trying to understand and help out.

Hello and welcome to HCM.
As a specilaist, i can fully understand and share your concern.
The MRI scan findings are consistent with your fathers' age, which would be about 70-75 or more. Alzheimers disease is most likely to have set in.
The symptoms of forgetfulness and confusion, etc, are quite common.
You don't worry too much about it.But these symptoms will persist and won't disappear with medicines. Explain this to your sister also.
If you've any doubts, send it to me as a direct question.
