Suggest Treatment For Chronic Heartburn Despite Taking Prilosec

I have cronic heartburn no matter what i do . I took Prilosec for many many years. Then ended up with kidney cancer and had my right kidney removed. My Nephroligist took me off of prilosec. Ived tried tagmet Zantac and nothing helps. I havent been able to get back to my Neph as i have so many other issues im dealing with. My pri dr. Put me on omeprazole only to find out they are the same as Prilosec. He was not aware of the issues with Prilosec and kidneys. Guess why i need to get back to my Neph. Ive been useing baking soda and it helps a little. Any suggestions?

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history and understood the concerns.
Heartburn means there is pain in the retrosternal area of chest and the cause is obviously esophagitis. The primary cause is reflux and not just acidity merely. Prilosec and ll such medications will control your acid production but does not stop reflux of stomach contents into esophagus hence the problems of heartburn.
Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Anti-reflux medicine like Domperidone or Reglan should be tried for about a few months along with antacids.
Stop smoking and alcohol if you are consuming.
Avoid stress and anxiety at any cost.
Improve the diet to suit you the most like soft and bland diet in small but frequent ways.
Upper GI Endoscopy.
Barium swallow and meal studies.
Esophageal manometry.
If all the medical management fails then surgical correction of the defect and anti-reflux procedure may help you the most.
