Suggest Treatment For Cervical Dystonia

I have been diagnosed with cervical dystonia and essential tremor of the neck. I have received botox injections x3.I have developed lymphedema in the right upper arm with pain and numbness in the hand. I have had several MRI and nerve conduction tests. These showed carpal tunnel impingement but nothing in the upper arm. Doctors recommend muscle relaxants. This does not address the lymphedema and I am fatigued from the tremors and the pain in the arm. I have tenderness in the chest wall up into my rt shoulder and neck. What would you suggest in terms of what Should be done? Ms Hansen

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Have you got MRI of spine done? What is the report showing? There is no specific cure for cervical dystonia. In some people, signs and symptoms may disappear without treatment, but recurrence is common.

People with cervical dystonia may also develop bone spurs that may reduce the amount of space in the spinal canal. This can cause tingling, numbness and weakness in your arms, hands, legs or feet.

Botulinum toxin, a paralyzing agent often used to smooth facial wrinkles, can be injected directly into the neck muscles affected by cervical dystonia. Sensory tricks are also useful like touching the opposite side of your face or the back of your head, may cause spasms to stop temporarily.

Surgical treatment like deep brain stimulation, cutting of the nerve that supply to the affected muscle etcetera may be helpful.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu
