Suggest Treatment For Bruise On The Eyebrow After Injury

Hi Doctor, my husband had a nasty fall from a ladder today and sustained a egg sized bruise over right eyebrow, with a very black eyelid, now semi closed,
We did the usual treatment eg ice packs, rest/sleep, analgesia and anti-inflamitories, lots of hydration and sugary teas. There was no loss of consciousness. but he was very shocked.
He is due to fly from Dublin to Manchester tomorrow lunchtime, would it be safe for him to continue with these plans? He is feeling very "achy" this evening but mobile in most other ways.
Many thanks,
Marita

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.

All the symptoms you have mentioned suggest the possibility of acondition called hematoma. This is generally caused by collection of blood under the skin following a blunt trauma. You don't need to worry regarding this as it will goes away by conservative measures in few days.
He can continue his journey with out any fear.
You can try the following as a first line management:-
(1)- Continue applying ice packs over the affected area.
(2)- Analgesics like ibuprofen or aceclofenac for pain.
(3)- Apply counter irritant creams like diclogel over the affected area.
Generally it takes five to seven days for complete remission of the swelling. If symptoms persist despite all these, consult a general practitioner and get a CT scan to rule out any minor fractures of facial bone.

Hope I have answered your query.
Regards.

Dr.Shinas Hussain
