Suggest Treatment For Bad Breath While On Mucinex

I am a 56 year old woman, 5'8", 168 pounds. For several years I have been suffering with bad breath and a very offensive odor coming from my nose. It has affected my social life tremendously. An ENT ruled out
tonsil stones and gave me instructions to take mucinex and allergy meds, but this has not helped. I suffered from asthma and allergies as a child. I've had no other serious illnesses, except a case of mono in my early
twenties. I'm now in menopause, so along with this, I do have moments of depression. I live in the Washington, DC (Maryland) and was also wondering if you can help me or refer me to someone in the area.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain bad breath also known as Halitosis can occur due to a number of causes like poor oral hygiene, oral and dental infections, tonsil stones or tonsilloliths, post nasal drip, sinusitis, acid reflux, respiratory infections, diabetes etc..

If you also have a bad odour coming from nose then it can b probably related to sinus infection or sinusitis while if it is due to tonsil stones that are actually a potent cause for bad breath then mucinex and allergy medicines will not help and you either need to get the tonsil stones removed or get Tonsillectomy done for improvement.

You should consult an Oral Physician or an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations depending upon suspected cause can help in diagnosis..
Treatment of underlying cause will relieve the symptoms..
As of now you should start gargling with a flavoured mouthwash twice a day..
You should chew flavored sugarfree chewing gum..
Take steam inhalations with few drops of eucalyptus oil in boiling water..
Do warm saline gargles twice a day..
Limit the intake of high aroma foods like onion and garlic..
Drink plenty of water and maintain a good oral hygiene..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
