Suggest Treatment For Ankle Pain And Swelling

I hurt my ankle on 10/31. It is still slightly swollen and hurts to the touch. It is my right foot, and right beneath the ankle bone on the outside of my foot. I thought I sprained it a little, but now I m wondering if it s a fracture. In any event, how would it be treated if I went to the dr? I have been icing and using ibuprofen.

Hi

It is a sprain most probably but if the symptoms persist for long time then to look for the possibility of ligament rupture or tear of the tendon.

You are doing the right thing .Icing for maximum 10 minutes at a time , and take ibuprofen as per the pain recurrence and intensity . You can repeat ibuprofen after each 6-8 hours if you are in intolerable pain .

You can put some compression bandage over the ankle especially when you are at work, walking or moving around.

At rest and at night while in bed for sleep , you can keep your foot and ankle elevated on some pillow etc , it will help reduce the swelling and thus pain .

If you visit the doctor , he will examine you by looking at the swelling , he will examine by placing his hand over the swelling and ankle joint to see the severity of the tenderness and pain , and also see the range of movements at ankle joint.

He may advise Xray of the ankle or MRI depending on the clincal examination findings and interpretations.
