Suggest Treatment For An ACL, MCL And Meniscus Injury

I have a knee injury that my orthopedic doctor says is a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus so I have been on crutches for the last three weeks. I started walking without them yesterday and now have insane pain on the top of my good foot. I thought I had just tied my shoes too tight, but the pain doesn t go away when I take the shoe off. I dont trust the doctors in my local hospital after they told me my knee was simply sprained. Should I worry about my foot?

hi,

thank you for providing the brief history of you.

A detailed musculoskeletal assessment is advised.

As you mentioned the ortho told you have - torn ACL, MCL and meniscus, have you performed any MRI? Because the extent of the soft tissue injury has to be determined. Usually with so many ligaments torn, the first thing is to confirm an MRI to plan the next step. If so much injury is there, than a surgery might be planned based on the MRI reports.

Also, in some cases due to less injury, the surgery is avoided and the joint is saved. With rest and medication the first 1 week is passed. Later than that, the physical therapy has to be performed under supervision as to regain the muscle strength. Not only for the bad leg, but also for the good leg too. As when you start applying weight on the feet, the pain should not limit the mobility. Also, weight bearing will start slowly from 25% initially, later 50% and then 75%, by this time it will be a good time to look for 100% weight bearing provided the knee assessment is taken from time to time.

In my clinical practice , once i confirm the Ligament injury with clinical examination , i advise an MRI, based on the MRI report the next step is taken, we go slow, no matter it is operative case or non operative case, we deal slow and get 99% result in 4-6 weeks of time.

If it is a sports injury case, we prolong upto 8-12 weeks of time, as to regain the 200% of the rehabilitation.
