Suggest Treatment For Acute Bronchitis And A Rash On The Scalp

I have a deep hacking cough that I have been treating for the last two weeks. My husband took me to an urgent care center where they diagnosed my problem as acute bronchitis. I was given an antibiotic (10 days), a steroid (5-day pack), and Delsym 12-hr. cough syrup (the pearls have not worked in the past). All medicine was used, but the cough has come back. Also, I have a rash on my scalp, which could be because of the Delsym or some stressful situation I am currently having. It seems like I can taste blood in my cough when it is at its worst, but there is not visible. Could this just be a continuation of the bronchitis?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

My thoughts and suggestions are as below. Deep hacking cough, taste of blood although the blood is not visible, recurrence of symptoms in spite of a course of antibiotic, steroid and Delsyn indicate that there is a cause that has not been cured. The possible infection can be from the sinuses or so. Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation: Consult an ENT Surgeon too for a second opinion and go for investigations as follows:

Tests of blood for CBC and others as required.Tests of the phlegm for gram staining, culture and sensitivity.

X-ray of Chest and Sinuses followed by CT scan if indicated. Clinical evaluation and examination. All these will give an idea about the possible cause that is giving you the symptoms and get an additional management. Till then do the following:

Steam inhalation by plain water boiling. Avoid sudden atmospheric changes like cold to hot. Take bed rest. Avoid people with viral infection. Avoid scents, fumes and so on; anything that irritates the respiratory passages.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
