Suggest Treatment For Aching Legs

My husband has been on phenobarbital for years at a dosage of 2 60 mg pills per day. The doctor increased the dosage to 2 97.2 per day in late December. He wants to sleep all the time, complains of aching in his legs, and is irritable. Is this 97.2 mg too much for him? He is 67 years old.

Hi,

It might have been useful if you had mentioned what is he taking phenobarbital for, is it seizures, is it insomnia or something else. Also why did the doctor increase the dose, was there an increase in seizure frequency perhaps.

Generally speaking I would say that phenobarbital is not a preferred medication and that dosage is a little high (though it can go higher), in particular for that age. It can be responsible for those symptoms you mention. So you should discuss these changes with his doctor and whether the dosage must be changed again.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
