Brief Answer: If it is inevitable , she can undergo the surgical operation with open procedure under general
anesthesia, taking in consideration the greater risk for complications due to the age , eventhough the adequate pre operatory preparation and the adequate care of the anesthesiologist.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for using HCM.
First of all, i want to explain you when the reparation of an
abdominal hernia is urgent : when it can not be reponated (return inside the abdomen when pushing with hands or in lye down position); when it is painful and have changed color into red ,or blue; when all the abdomen is painful and there is no bowel movement. If nothing of this is happening , it's reparation is not an emergency. She has to put a band around her belly pushing inside the hernia while is standing up. She should avoid hard
cough and weights lifting.
Now returning to the surgical intervention ....Abdominal
hernias, especially big ones can not be repaired in laparoscopic way and are done under general anesthesia. Only in case of small hernias especially inguinal hernias can be used the laparoscopic way to repair them. And when it is repaired in laparoscopic way, the general anesthesia is anavoidable. In your mother in low case, it can be repaired only by open method (laparothomy) and under general anesthesia. Nowadays, general anesthesia is really extraordinarily safe with today's precise administration and monitoring.
Eventhough being she 77 years makes all the procedure more risky, but not an resolvable.
So, before surgery she must do series of pre-op exams consisting of blood tests, an EKG (electrocardiogram) and a chest X-ray, to be sure your heart and lungs are in good condition. She must stop taking some over-the-counter medications for a week to 10 days before surgery, such as
aspirin or
ibuprofen (
Advil), which can increase bleeding.
And then she is ready for the surgery.
Hope this is helpful.
