Suggest Treatment For A Bleeding Scratch Wound Caused By A Dog

Hi there, I was playing with my 7 month old puppy tonight and he slipped and scratched the inside of my thigh. It s quite a big scratch and has bled quite a bit but now stopped. It s very stingy and a little hot. I was wondering if I need a tetanus. Thanks

Hi & Welcome to HCM.
If the scratch wound is caused by the animal (puppy) bite, you need to take FOUR doses of anti rabies vaccine on days 0,3,7, and 14. If your puppy is found to be healthy and not showing any abnormal behavior for 10 days following the bite, you can discontinue the fourth dose of of vaccine on day 14th. You also need to take local treatment for the wound (aseptic measures) and a single shot of tetanus toxoid.
Don't forget to vaccinate your puppy every year and maintain the vaccination certificate valid.
Hope this will help.
