My 2 year daughter suffered 4 UTI infections last year.In september 2013 she was hospitalised and was put on Bactrim 2.5 ml daily as preventive measure for one year now.Ever since she did not have any UTI infection. She had a DMSA scan in January 2014 which showed Renal Scarring of left kidney both on superior and intferior poles. Her kidneys functions 63 % right kidney and 37 % Left Her MCU report was normal with no reflex problem detected She has repeat DMSA scan last month and finding show no improvement in scarring of left kidney and still right kidney works 63% and left is contributing 37 % and there is moderate inflammation in left kidney.Doctor says she has dysplasmic left kidney. Please advise if any long term treatment is there. Regards, Preeti

Urologist 's  Response
Hello
Thanks for query.
Your 2 years old daughter has repeated UTI and has revealed to have Left Dysplastic kidney and DMSA scan has revealed scarring of the left kidney with function of 37%.

Since she does not have VU reflux there is no possibility of further damage to kidney .You have to ensure that she does not get UTI which can be achieved by giving small doses of Prophylactic antibiotic like Nitrofurantoin or Bactrim,

Kidney with 37% function is acceptable and no active intervention is needed
