Suggest Treatment For Baker S Cyst

I was diagnosed with a baker s cyst behind my right knee and after xrays and an MRI, I was given a shot in my knee. It decreased the swelling and discomfort for about 3 weeks. Now it is swelling again. The orthopaedist said the next step is surgery to repair the tear in the muscle and to try to scope out some arthritis. Should I get a second opinion?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Some of the possible treatment of Baker cyst is:

Injection of a corticosteroid medication, such as cortisone, into your knee to reduce inflammation.

Fluid drainage. Your doctor may drain the fluid from the knee joint using a needle.

Physical therapy such as icing, a compression wrap, and crutches may help reduce pain and swelling. If these option does not help in relieve, I suggest surgery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
