Suggest Treatment For 2nd Degree Burns On The Face

I received what they said ar the ER 2nd degree burns on my face. I believe that a small section under my right nostril and a little bit of my cheek and my upper lip were 3rd degree burns. All the areas of 2nd degree burns have healed with no problems. But the other area still has some swelling, upper right side of lip much higher than the other side, and other areas of my cheek feel very hard underneath. I am still putting the sulphate ointment on these hard places but nothing seems to help. Do you have any suggestions to help relieve this uncomfortable situation. The original injury occured on May 15th.

Hi,

Noted your well mentioned history about burns on face and the sequel that occured in the form of contracture.
The healing of superficial burns well but the right upper lip appearing higher than the left upper lip, hard feeling underneath the skin all indicate that you have developed fibrosis that has lost the pliability of the tissues underneath in the form of what we call as contracture.
Most of the ointments and liniments meant to reduce the contracture are not much successful although some reports may indicate so and must have the actually the body mechanisms working well.
The best way I can tell you are as follows:
First of all, consult a Plastic Surgeon dealing with burns and its complications.
You need a good amount and correct dosages of all the vitamins, mineral and trace elements as these help to rejuvenate the skin and underlying tissues; if possible get the vitamin estimate so that you can take correct therapeutic dosages.
A mixture of honey and petroleum jelly woks the best for softening the scars.
Oral steroid may sometimes be helpful at an appropriate time and proper reducing dosages can really help a lot.
Medicines like Serratiopeptidase can help further.
Minor surgical correction of the scar can help to equalize the levels of the lips.
Rest of the treatment and management as per the opinion of a Plastic Surgeon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
