Hi,I am Dr. Robert Galamaga (Hematologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 8 month old grandson has been admitted to the hospital. He's had a cold and fever for about 3 days. He's not eating or drinking well and has become somewhat dehydrated. They got some blood work back. His WBCs are elevated and his hemoglobin is low. What could cause the low hemoglobin?
Hi, Thanks for asking. Based on your clinical history and query, my opinion is as follows: 1. Infants are very much prone to iron deficiency as breast milk is deficient in iron. 2. Along with it, malnutrition and diarrhea episodes can cause low iron and also Vitamins like B12 and folic acid 3. Nutritional supplementation should be adequate to improve hemoglobin levels. WBC is elevated because of fever and will get corrected, when treated. Hope it helps. Any further queries, happy to help again.
