Suggest Tests To Diagnose Oral Herpes

My son might have oral herpes, type 1. We are still waiting on the results. He has no sores at this point and recently did not have safe sex. he s a college senior and my fear is that he will have to live with this for the rest of his life. Should he go see an infectious disease doctor. What is the cure or treatment?

Hi Dear ,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query . Herpes simplex or herpes type 1 is also called oral herpes. It is caused by herpes simplex virus 1 due to contact with infected person like kissing , using cloths or utensils .

Symptoms will go away on their own in 1-2 weeks . Drugs can be used to relieve the symptoms , to decrease the pain and outbreaks . You should take ibuprofen (if not allergic) or acetaminophen for pain.

I would suggest you to consult dermatologist for proper examination . Doctor may order PCR or viral culture test. He/she may prescribe antiviral drugs like oral/topical acyclovir or famiciclovir .

For now apply iace pack to affected area 2-3 times a day , wash face with antiseptic soap and avoid hot and spicy food . Tea tree oil and aloe vera gel will also be helpful.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
