Suggest Side Effects Of Metoprolol

My father in law was in the hospital for pnemonia. He also has low blood pressure. He was prescribed metoprolol which he has never taken. Since the first day he started that medication his condition has worsened and he seems to be suffering from all of the side effects of the medication. Could he discontinue using that medicaion until he speaks to his doctor tomorrow?

Hi,

Metoprolol belongs to the group of medications known as beta blockers that is used in the treatment of high blood pressure, angina and prevention of strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems etc. This medication has side effects of its own. Side effects of Metoprolol are shortness of breath, cough, irregular breathing, chest pain or discomfort, dizziness, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, weakness, hypotension, dry mouth, cold extremities, bloating, stomach pain, extreme fatigue, bradycardia, diarrhea or constipation, fainting, allergic reactions etc.

If someone stops taking this medication abruptly, then it can exacerbate angina, increase the risk of heart attack or cardiac arrhythmia etc. So, your father in law should not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor first.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
