I believe that I have a stye on my bottom eye lid. It went from a small swelling that has grown and now it is tender and very painful. It has spread over the entire bottom lid and has been this way for about three days now. How do I treat it? I put preparation H on it, to shrink the swelling and it was helping but now it is now. I am very uncomfortable and this is very unsightly...Help

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concern.
Incomplete data like age, gender, duration of your problem?

You seem to have an infected oil glands of your lower eye lid.
You need oral antibiotics (Amoxicillin three times daily) along with NSAID pain killers like Ibuprofen three times daily for a period of 7 days.
Besides the medications:

1 Apply warm compresses 4-6 times a day for about 15 minutes at a time to help the drainage.
Keep the eyes closed when applying the warm compresses.
2. Gently scrub the eyelid with tap water or with a mild, nonirritating soap, or shampoo (such as baby shampoo). This may help with drainage. Close the eyes as you scrub so you do not injure your eyes.
3. Do not squeeze or puncture the stye. A more serious infection may occur as a result.
4. Discontinue the use of eye makeup as well as eye lotions and creams because they may be contaminated with the bacteria from the infection.

If the painful swelling does not respond to antibiotics and other measures as suggested above, then it could have developed into an abscess which should be incised under local anesthesia and drained.
An ophthalmologist consultation is thus recommended.
Take care.
