Suggest Remedy For Side Effects Post Intake Of Statins

I had side effects such as muscle pain, dizziness after taking simvastatin, pravastatin and lovastatin. I am afraid to try atorvastatin because of the possible side effects... I even tried Red Yeast Rice with side effects too. I am 74 and have given up meat , just eat fish, veggies and fruits . I sometimes eat eggs but don,t drink milk or eat any dairy .. What would you suggest I take since I cannot deal with the statins? Thank you ..

Hello,

You can control your cholesterol and triglyceride levels by maintain healthy diet and exercises. But you should get lipid function tests done in every 50 days to access whether you are improving otherwise you will need medical intervention. You should do walking at least 1 (one) km everyday and when you get comfortable, try increase it to two kms but do not force it on yourself if you can't.

Take boiled food like whole cereals, veggies and fruits. Avoid red meat & full fat dairy products, trans fat, cut on carbohydrates, refined flour, salty food, deserts that are sweet (cut on sugar). You can add a little olive oil for taste. Take omega 3 diet (salmon, mackeral, trout, etc), drink green tea, take apple cidar vinegar and citrus fruits. Take food cooked in garlic, coriander seeds, cayenne pepper.

Cut on alcohol, smoking or addictions if any. No cakes, pastries, fatty or fried food. Strict diet control combined with walking, exercises and adequate sleep will help your triglyceride and cholesterol levels to slowly come down. Get follow up clinical check up done and maintain your vitals once it comes to normal.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
