Suggest Remedy For Severe Pain After Tooth Extraction

Hi, about 2 days ago I had a tooth extracted. I had to go back to the dentist yesterday because of severe pain related to a dry socket. The area was also infected so I was put on antibiotics and pain killers. The pain is still very severe and it is radiating to other teeth on the affected side. Is this normal?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

As per your query severe pain after tooth extraction which is not subsiding even after pain killer and antibiotics is the probable case of dry socket. Sometimes this pain occurs due to excessive tissue laceration and massive use of instrumentation and application of heavy pressure on socket while extracting tooth as tooth deeply embedded.

Need not to worry about anything. This can happen after extraction many a times. Take antibiotics course along with painkiller such as Ibuprofen to prevent pain and its radiating symptoms.

Do warm saline gargles. Maintain proper oral hygiene. Brush with super soft tooth brush very gently. Do betadine gargles as well. Don't touch the socket with tongue.

Eat soft food from that side and after cooling that. Drink cold water and have ice creams for faster healing.

If your symptoms of pain keeps on persisting then it is sure case of dry socket. Visit dentist and get Eugenol dressing done in socket every day for around a week till naked bone formation starts.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
