Suggest Remedy For Pressure Behind Eyes When On Prednisone

Dr. Rynne, I had a chronic cough and post-nasal drip for nine years. I would also break out in rashes and treated with Prednisone. I went to an allergist/immunology doctor. He said my underlined problem was my thyroid. In 1986 I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroid. The doctor at that time treated the problem with PTU and it was resolved. The allergist said the thyroid was the cause of the rashes and it was not related to food. I was diagnosed with possible chronic bacterial sinusitis w/post nasal drip and cough mimicking asthma-like symptoms. Also, I have Gustatory Rhinitis. I was prescribed Augmentin 875mg twice a day along with Flonase 2 sprays in each nostril and Azelastine HCL-137mcg 2 sprays in each nostril. All taken at the same time twice a day. The 6th day I developed a severe headache on the rt side of my head and my rt eye swelled(blurred vision) two days later. He related the problem to my thyroid. Prescribe Predisone 20 mg (2 tablets in the morning for 7 days). Prescribed Ceftin 500mg(I have not ordered it from the pharmacy) Flonase once a day. The third day the swelling of the eye started to go down. The fourth day I was doing my excercise 200 situps 100 reverse crunches 50 pushups and running in place. I do this every morning before going to work. I look in the mirror and my right eyebrow shifted up. There is pressure behind the eye and tightness around the eyebrow. I have never had this happen before in my life time and I am 62. I never had a rx to Prednisone. This is my first time using a steroid nasal spray. The Dr. is out of the office until July 7. The advice nurse did not know the cause of my problem.Advised to have my thyroid checked, continue taking the Prednisone and not exercise. The eye pressure and blurred vision was already present before taking the Prednisone. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The symptoms seem to be due to hyperthyroidism. You are advised to get your Thyroid profile (T3,T4 and TSH) level checked & adjusted your dose of anti-thyroid accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Satnarain Bansal, General & Family Physician
