Suggest Remedy For Pertussis In Infants

Greetings doc My daughter was diagnosed with Pertussis when she was 22 days old, shes much better now by Gods grace and slowly recovering, now she is 3 months and 8 days old but her feeding is very poor,we feed her every 2 hours 60 ml but she takes in maximum of 40/50 ml only and at times 60 ml(shes on breastmilk and Simlac formula as well because my milk supply was low).Birth weight was 3.390 Kg and now only 4.8. Wanted to know if her weight gain is okay and how much ml should each of her feed be. Good day Regards Ms.Satheesh

Welcome to Hcm

See pertusis is very rare nowadays due to the emergence of vaccine. Even though if your baby is affected she should be fine as the disease is self limiting. Just forget the pertusis part, just to follow up during her vaccine shots.

Now the point of concern is her feeding and weight gain.

Ideally we docs calculate the milk requirement for a baby of this age as 150ml per kg per day.
As her weight is 4.8, requirement is atleast 600ml per day, i.e 50ml 2nd hourly.

Breast milk is the best milk.

Mother can improve her diet and take medications to improve lactation.

Inorder to increase weight gain for the baby add 1ml of MCT oil to each feed.

Keep her wrapped well, because heat loss from her body may also manifest as poor weight gain.

Kangaroo mother care has to be followed for atleast 30mins a day

Take care of your baby well, she will be fine.
