Suggest Remedy For Persistent Sore Throat

I had a crown put in about 2 weeks ago. During the initial stages of the procedure, when the numbing agent was used, I experienced a burning sensation down my throat. The remainder of the 2 hour procedure went well, although so much anesthesia was used that I had some difficulty swallowing. The next day my throat was very sore and I was having shortness of breath. My voice was raspy and I would lose it after any conversation of any length. When this persisted for 3 days I called my dentist and he said that it may be due to swallowing some of the numbing agent which caused scouring of the throat. He prescrived an anti-microibial gargle/rinse to be used twice a day to ward off any infection. It now is 12 days post-procedure and I stilll have a sore throat, the glands on the same side of my neck as the dental work are sore and seem swollen, and my hoarse voice is reduced to a whisper after a normal conversation of 5 minutes. I d like your opinion about what s going on. Thank you.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query persistent sore throat after dental treatment is because of swallowing effect of numbing gel and anesthesia which caused scratching inside the throat. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to start with warm saline gargles and betadine gargles 3-4 times a day. For pain and swelling you should take ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis and rule out condition like strep throat and viral infection . Doctor may prescribe antibiotics penicillin or amoxicillin or anti viral drug depending upon the diagnosis along with decongestants and anti inflammatory . Avoid hot, sharp , spicy food substances , do warm saline rinses and carbonated beverages. Keep brushing twice daily and use Listerine mouth wash. Do flossing twice a week . Keep drinking plenty of water

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
