Hello,

I have seen a lot of children that routinely receive nebulizer treatments and a number of them frequently complain of dry irritating cough symptoms usually later in the day. Their lungs are clear as a bell but they do have that dry nagging cough. I do empathize. I did read that your daughter is four years old, one solution to that I myself have done with pediatric patients, is to request from your pediatrician or family doctor a nighttime dose of the nebulizer medication Pulmicort, also known as Budesonide.

This is an inhaled steroid, and I’m not saying that you would have to use this every evening but even a small dose given before bed through the nebulizer would really cut down some of the inflammation in both the lower and the upper airways. You might even be able to decrease the frequency of the nebulizers throughout the day and just use that at night. That has worked very well for me in my practice to help eliminate the nagging nighttime cough for kids. You wouldn’t even have to use the Pulmicort all the time, it could be used intermittently if that was a concern. I hope that helps, at least it may give you a different avenue to go down with your pediatrician.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
