Suggest Remedy For Pain Due To Aerosinusitis

Hello, On my flight from Nashville to Dallas, I experience aerosinusitis for the first time. It was horrible and the pain is still very much present. I took a narcotic for pain (that s how painful it is!) and steroid nasal spray. My question is, has anyone ever died from aerosinusitis? And, what is the best way to prevent it? I fly back to Nashville in just two days and I m terrified.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are terrified due to pain you experienced due to aero sinusitis while flying. You are suggested to get treated the underlying cause of your sinus problems. Get connected to an ENT, discuss your history of sinus pain and get treated at the earliest. In the meantime, to avoid pain due to aero sinusitis, taking decongestants may be helpful. To avoid pain chewing gum or sipping water during take off or landing may help.

Flying with sinus infection pain can be an unpleasant experience but it is not life threatening. However, you are suggested to get treated before flying to prevent discomfort. To manage pain, Valsalva maneuver may help. Gently Exhale with your nose closing one of your nostrils with your hand, keep your mouth closed. Aero sinusitis may be triggered due to ear infections, common cold, respiratory infections. Avoid flying when you have these.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
