Hi,

Benadryl contains diphenhydramine that belongs to the group of medications known as antihistamines is used in the treatment of allergy and its associated symptoms like runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes, itching or rash, hay fever, common cold etc. But, stop taking Benadryl abruptly may cause some unpleasant symptoms that is known as withdrawal syndrome. Symptoms of withdrawal syndrome are nausea or vomiting, dizziness, loss of appetite, diarrhea, difficulty sleeping, constant restlessness, sweating, headache, anxiety etc.

These symptoms usually start within 48-96 hours after the last dose of Benadryl and may last up to 7days. Usually these symptoms are mild as well as self limiting and go away over time without treatment. But if these symptoms persist for long or bother you then you should consult your doctor first for medical attention.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Cardiologist Dr. Ilir Sharka's  Response
Hello,

Your symptoms could be related to Benadryl withdrawal syndrome. For this reason, I recommend reducing the dose slowly (half a tablet for two weeks and then a quarter of tablet for other two weeks and then stop it) in order to help improve your situation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
