Suggest Remedy For Hole From Jaw To Sinus Causing Sinus Problems Post Teeth Extraction

I had all of my teeth pulled in March due to complications after a major heart attack in 2013. When they pulled my teeth I ended up with a hole from my jaw to my sinus which they did nothing about. I have had severe sinus problems for the past 3 months and I'm worried something else will go wrong. What do I do and what should I be concerned about?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query . The symptom you mention in query happens sometimes during the forceful extraction of maxillary teeth due to penetration of root or dental instrument in sinus . This cause infection in sinus again and again .

I would suggest you to consult oral surgeon immediately .

Doctor will examine it physically and may order X-ray and CT scam to find out how big the perforation is and what is the location of hole .

There can be few treatment options like -

- If the hole is small then doctor wil give suture from oral cavity .

- If the opening is large then doctor will perform surgery through nose or by other rout which is a little complicated procedure .

- Sometimes graft will be placed to close the opening.

Till then i would suggest you to :-

- Avoid swimming .

- Avoid blowing of nose .

- Do saline rinses .

Take advil (if not allergic) or tylenol for pain .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain the problem of a hole from mouth to sinus is known as ORO-ANTRAL FISTULA which happens due to accidental perforation at the floor of maxillary sinus during extraction of teeth..

It leads to communications between mouth and sinus and Oral and nasal discharges are being communicated and can lead to sinus infection and inflammation known as SINUSITIS..

Yes you should be concerned about it and consult an oral surgeon who can surgically close the perforation site either by stitching the gum flaps of the extraction socket from where perforation has happened or take a flap from palate and close the opening..

You need to take antibiotics, painkillers to relieve pain and sinus infection and in case of congestion decongestant like Pseudoephadrine and antihistamine like Claritin has to be taken...

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
