I had gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
This could be serous otitis media, also called as glue ear. This could be secondary to Eustachian tube dysfunction. This tube connects the inside ear with back of the nose and drains, ventilates the ear. Dysfunction of this tiny tube may lead to accumulation of fluid in ear. Chronic accumulation of fluid usually treated with grommet insertion. That is a tiny tube inserted into the ear drum, which helps to drain the fluid.
I think his treating doctor has already advised the same.
He will be fine.
Hope I have answered your question. If you have any questions, I am happy to help you.
Wish him a good health and speedy recovery.
