Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I've not been able to smell for almost 4yrs due to nasal polyps. I've gone to GP several time but have been prescribed with steroids (flixonase) every time. It works until the medicine lasts and I'm back to square one again. Why my doc is not referring me to ENT doctor?
I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..
As per your complain nasal polyps are small mass of mucosal tissues that are formed inside the nostrils and are responsible for causing nasal congestion and blocked nose and can lead to reduced hearing and taste..
But in case if there is complete loss of smell you need to consult an ENT surgeon and get evaluated as there can be a few other causes like sinusitis, polyps in sinus, nerve damage, brain trauma etc.. A nasal endoscopy, MRI or CT SCAN can help in diagnosis and treatment can be planned accordingly.. In case if nasal polyp is confirmed as the culprit then steroid nasal drops can help in shrinkage of the polyp.. In case if it still does not resolve surgical removal is left out as the option..
Hope this information helps..
Thanks and regards. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora.
