Suggest Remedies For Mild Asthma

We have driven from very flatland to a higher elevation in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I have mild asthma (controlled) but am feeling light headed, slightly queasy, have a mild headache and am extremely fatigued. Could this be due to a change in elevation? No asthma symptoms except short of breath.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Your symptoms are in fact consistent with acute mountain sickness. It sounds like your symptoms are mild, so in your case no medication is needed, other than Tylenol for headache if you like. However, while having symptoms I would recommend against going higher, especially if you plan to sleep. This can lead to a dangerous worsening of the sickness. However, if you stay at the same elevation, your symptoms should resolve in 24 to 48 hours, or whenever you descend back down.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch,
