Nightmares are a form of parasomnia. The best treatment is to understand the underlying cause if at all possible. In some cases medication may be appropriate which actually can target the area of the brain involved in generating such troubling dreams. There are 2 specific medications which are well known to be helpful for nightmares. They are Prazosin and Clonidine and are both prescription.
