Hi,

Constipation is very common in infants. I suggest you give your child purees of vegetables and fruits introducing these, one by one to rule out an allergy. This will help in relieving constipation. Juices that contain sorbitol, such as prune, pear, and apple juices can also decrease constipation. Gripe water is also good and can be given. Don’t use more than 6 times in 24 hrs.

At this stage, nothing additional is required and dietary changes must be followed. However, in case constipation worsens or is bothersome to the level that stool frequency decreases drastically, low volume Polyethylene glycol (PEG) can be administered but with proper consultation and discussion with healthcare physician who will do physical examination first. Glycerin suppositories are reserved for extreme cases.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Maninder, General & Family Physician
