Suggest Medication For Type 1 Diabetes

Hi. My type 1 diabetic daughter was recently in hospital and spent a good deal of time unconscious. She was hooked up to dextrose and saline drips. I ve had her blood reports through and the insulin level in her blood, whilst she was unconcious was 1100. I know this is very high and potentially very dangerous. Is this a dangerous level - she is 13. I m unsure what a normal insulin level would be compared to this result? Thanks

Hello,

Type 1 diabetes is the one in which the insulin producing cells in the pancreas are damaged and there is no or little insulin produced. For a person to live Insulin is required. If the body does not produce insulin in some form or the other has to be administered. Newer insulins are being developed and one may do away with injections in the future. There are also studies on artificial pancreas , genetic engineering and other methods to produce insulin in the body itself. So don't lose heart , may be in the future she can be managed without injections. As of now she has to take insulin and that is a reality.
A blood sugar of 1100 mg/dl is very high considering that the normal average blood sugar is about 120 mg/dl.
But don't worry with proper and continuous treatment it can be maintained normal and she will grow up healthy and normal in other matters. i have many Type 1 patients who lived a normal life , married and have normal children.
I shall be happy to answer any queries you might have in the future.
Wish your daughter a very healthy life.
