Hello,
It is not unusual for there to be some discomfort associated with removal of wisdom teeth. Depending on the complication of the surgery, there could be concern with the sinus or tempromandibular joint. Delay in intial healing can result in a painful condition called a
dry socket. This occurs within the first week after an extraction and requires a return visit, medication and a prescription antibiotic. Total healing is a slow process. You are taking correct steps to make follow up visits and seek second opinions. I suggest visiting an oral surgeon and taking a panorex. There are other scans and tests available if necessary to assist a diagnosis.
Depending on the difficulty with and length of surgery, the TMJ can be stressed. Does your daughter grind her teeth? This can also be a reaction to college level pressures experienced by students. I suggest trying a night guard. Use at night can act as a cushion and offer relief. Limit stress to the joint with a
soft diet. Moist heat and anti-inflammatory medication may help reduce symptoms. Try to avoid continued use of
oxycontin. Taking two ibuprofen and two extra strength
acetaminophen at regular intervals should be an effective alternative to an episode of
severe pain.
Symptoms of congestion,
post nasal drip, nasal discharge and continued sinus pressure should be monitored. Seek the opinion of an
ENT specialist if any uncomfortable sinus conditions persist.
Thank you for your inquiry. I hope that my suggestions are helpful and that your daughter feels better soon.
