Suggest Medication For Persistent Anxiety And Depression

I have been diagnosed with Depression and Generalized Anxiety disorder I have been on many medications and nothing seems to help. Recently I have recently been prescribed Citralopram 40mg as well as a sleep aid as I cannot seem to sleep at all but for the last months have been experiencing excessive anxiety with nothing triggering it. Is there anything that will help the excessive anxiety and generalized anxiety disorder that I cannot seem to overcome

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. You have been diagnosed with Depression and Generalised Anxiety Disorder and are advised to take Citalopram. Citalopram is a SSRI drug. In most of patients of anxiety disorder and depression the treatment should be continued for long time to see best effects of the drugs. The medicines takes about 3-6 weeks to show response and the symptoms reduce gradually. This is the reason a lot of individuals drop from treatment because of slower response. So I'd advise you to stick to the treatment and visit your psychiatrist regularly. Citalopram is right drug for depression and anxiety. Your other issue is sleep problems. Sleeping aids can help in good sleep for some time but they are not the right choice of treatment because of risk of dependence with sleeping aids. To prevent this some antidepressants can be used that can also act as sleeping aids like Trazodone, Mirtazapine etc. These drugs will help in sound sleep and will help in early recovery. Please consult a psychiatrist for proper treatment and prescription of these drugs.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
