Hi,I am Dr. Robert Galamaga (Hematologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have chronic gout, my rheumatologist currently has me on colcrys once a day and I am also on allepurinol, recently they called me worried about my platelets count being lower than the 150,000, can this be caused by either medicines I am on? Or could it be something else?
Hi, Thanks for asking. Based on your query, my opinion is as follows. 1. Both colchicine and allopurinol can cause rarely thrombocytopenia. 2. Bone marrow biopsy will help in identification of the exact cause. If megakaryocytes are low, it is possible the medications are affecting. 3. Stop one and look for a month and evaluate platelet count. If improving, continue with diet composed of cherries. Avoid meat, alcohol and caffeine. Hope it helps. Any further queries, happy to help again.
