Suggest Medication For Chest Congestion, Running Nose, Cough

My 3.5 year old grandson woke up yesterday with chest congestion, runny nose, and a cough. I have liquid Mucinex with guaifenasin and dextromethorophan. He weighs 35.5 lbs. Normally a very healthy little boy. The box says not to give to child under 4 years of age. So what can I give him. I called my pharmacist and all he could advise were a humidifier and saline nasal drops. That is not going to work well enough. His dad will take him to the doc if needed.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that your son is suffering from upper respiratory tract infection also known as common cold and the symptoms of chest congestion, runny nose and cough seems to be due to it..
I would suggest you to give him anti allergics like Benadryl, as well as Mucinex can also be given..
Give him Acetaminophen..
You can do saline nasal irrigations as it helps in draining of the mucous easily..
You should also make him do steam inhalations and use a humidifier in your room..
Chewing Vitamin C pellet can help..
Give him plenty of warm fluids and a soft bland diet..
Give him sufficient rest..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
