I am 60 and just dx with osteoporosis in the neck and spine. Spine: T= -2.9, hip is only T= -1.8 My mom had a bilateral mastectomy at age 47. She is 85 now. My doctor wanted to put me on Evista. I asked about Fosamax, I was told I could go on either or both. I am confused.

Evista is a hormonal medication so should be taken with caution. It is a two edge sword, and has side effects so always consult with doctors regularly. As far as Fosamax is concerned it should be taken not more then 3 months. also take calcium and vitamin D3 regularly.

Geriatrics Specialist Dr. Prakash H Muddegowda's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
Based on your clinical history and query, my opinion is as follows:
1. You have moderate degree of osteoporosis for your age.
2. Both Evista and Fosamax are used for treatment.
3. Evista is usually first line and if allergic or sensitivity then Fosamax is taken.
4. Your doctor gave you the option of using both or any one of your choice. Its upto you. Both are helpful in osteoporosis.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.

Hi
Thanks for posting your query
After going through your suffering ,severe weakness of bone (osteoporosis) for which calcium tablet alone may not work. The osteoporosis may be confirmed by Bone mineral density (BMD) by dexa scan along with X ray of spine.
For now my advice would be-
1. For Osteoporosis there is few options like- calcitonin nasal spray (Rock bone C nasal spray).
- Once a year injection of zoldronic acid, once a month tablet of alendronate, once a week tablet of osteophos.
- Injection Teriparatide.
You may discuss with your treating doctor and decide what is best for you. Once the pain is reduced you may start exercises to strengthen the back that is back strengthening exercises.
Take balanced diet rich in calcium (1000mg/day) and vitamin D (1000 i.u. /day) along with vitaminB12, B6.Vitamin D is available in weekly dose pattern as well as injection, just talk to your local doctor as the above written medicine are prescription only .
Hope this information suffices.
Take care and I shall be glad to answer any further query.

Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Sunil Kumar Srivastava's  Response
If you have had menopause 3-5years back then evista is useful for post menopausal osteoporosis, otherwise fosamax once weekly shall help.if menopause is greater than 5 years, in all probability, your osteoporosis is not post menopausal and then evista is not required. For less than 3 years of menopause , both may be given if it is severe osteoporosis
