Suggest Dosage Of Thyronnorm For High TSH
Dear Doctor,My mother has been taking Eltroxin for the past 30 years due to high TSH levels but an year also when TSH was reported to be at 27 her doctor changed Eltroxin to Thyronnorm 125 mcg.But after an year when her TSH levels were checked (just two months back) it went below 1.Then her doc advised her to take the half of 125 mcg.She continued the same for 2 months and now again her TSH has shoot upto 27.Please advise what is the correct dosage she should take? and is there any difference between Eltroxin and Thyronorm. Welcome to HCM. I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.
The answer to your questions are:
1. The correct dose will be 112.5 mcg if she is regular with medication.
Once on treatment the TSH should be between 0.5 and 3.5 miu/ml. Your correct dose of thyroxine is the dose which keep TSH in that range. Here if she was regular with thyroxine 100 mcg - the TSH of 27 shows the dose is inadequate and TSH of
So for her Thyroxine 100 mcg is a low dose and 125 mcg is a high dose. So ideal dose should be 112.5 mcg. After taking in regularly for 2 months we can retest the TSH. Based on that we can increase or decrease the dose.
2. Thyronorm and Eltroxin are same.
Thyronorm and Eltroxin are 2 medical companies that manufacture Levothyroxine - which is the thyroid hormone used for replacement. Both are same. This is just like Calpol and Dolo that we use for paracetamol.
