Fatty liver results due to accumulation of fat in liver when there is protein deficiency in the body due to improper food intake or malnutrition.

1. Consume a healthy diet with adequate protein intake and low in fat especially saturated fats. Proteins come from pulses/grams/beans (kidney beans, chickpeas), milk and milk products like curd/cottage cheese. Include low fat milk or remove cream from milk.
2. If non-vegetarian, avoid intake of red meat and organ meats like liver and kidney as they are rich in cholesterol. You can have chicken, eggwhite (preferrably boiled) and fish.
3. Limit intake of ghee/butter and margarine. Avoid fried and fatty foods like nuts/dried fruits, rich gravies with lots of oil and junk foods.
4. Include whole fruits in your diet instead of fruit juices. They will provide not only vitamins and minerals necessary for liver repair but also lower cholesterol levels due to fibre content.
5. Eat more whole grain cereals like oats, oat bran, whole wheat products and broken wheat porridge. Prefer brown rice/partly milled rice or parboiled rice instead of white polished rice.
6. Avoid bakery items like cookies, cakes, pastries, cream rolls etc.
7. Limit intake of spices and chillies. Have raw foods like salads without oily or fat rich dressings like mayonnaise.
8. Avoidance of alcohol is the best way to prevent fatty liver resulting due to excess calorie intake. Alcohol provides only empty calories (7 kcal/gm of alcohol), no nutrients.
9. Exercise to burn excess calories which deposit as fat in the body and also to lower your cholesterol levels.
