Green stools can be normal and are not a cause of worry. It is due to rapid transit through the large intestine that the colour does not get time to be converted from green to yellow. In case of diarrhoea, greenish stools can occur. Most of the diarrhoea in children is due to viral infection with a virus called rotavirus. Unless ova and cysts or amoeba have been detected in the stool there is not reason to label it as amoebic. The cause takes care of its own and nothing needs to be done about it unless there is bloody diarrhoea. The salt and water lost needs to be replenished using ORS. During diarrhoeal episodes, lactose containing prepartions need to be avoided as it can aggravate diarrhoea further. Lactose free milk or low lactose formula can be given instead. Also give Zinc supplements like Zinconia. Give proper diet of mashed boiled rice based items including vegetables and pulses. You can also give chicken and eggs in mashed form.
