Suggest An Effective Medication For Migraine

I am looking for a new migraine prescription medication. I have taken Fiorinal for many years and no longer find them effective. I was then taking Excedrine OTC Migraine and due to the fact the risks are high when taking acetaminophen, for liver disease I no longer feel confident taking this medication. Can you suggest a new medication?

General & Family Physician 's  Response

Hi
Thank you for asking HCM.
I have gone through your query. There are two types of therapy for migraine. One as preventive which should be taken for long term and another one (pain and symptoms reliever) at the time of migraine attack. At the time of migraine attack you can use triptans like sumatriptan or rizatriptan. You can use his as nasal sprays also. Other options are NSAIDs like ibuprofen or ketoprofen. Antinausea medications like domperidone can be taken along with this. Preventive medications are betablockers like metaprolol ,antiseizure drugs like Topiramate. These should be taken for long term. A consultation with a neurologist is well appreciated for selecting appropriate therapy for you.
Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
