Suggest An Alternative To Aggrenox For Treatment Of TIA

Yes, my husband was diagnosed w a TIA on June 1. He has been placed on Crestor and on aggrenox (he had previously been on plavix with bleeding problems). He has started experiencing headaches and I see that it is a side effect of aggrenox. Is there another blood thinner he could take in lieu of aggrenox?? We will try to see his doctor tomorrow, if possible.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As the combination pill of aspirin and dipyridamole is causing headache, before switching to other molecule, separate molecules must be used and see for the results whether headache occurs or not. Even if the separate molecules are giving headache, replacement of dipyridamole must be sorted out as ticlopidine or others which can affect the P2Y12 or ADP receptors of platelet activation pathway.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
