Suggest An Alternative Of Atenolol

I have been taking Atenolol for about 20 years for arrhythmias and elevated resting heart rate (even had this when I was running track in high school - 115 beats per minute at night. Now, Atenolol is unavailable. I understand it is more for high blood pressure, but I do not have that. What could I take as a safe alternative to Atenolol?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Atenolol is beta blocker group of drug. It is used for hypertension, arrhythmia, tachycardia (rapid heart rate). Newer improved beta blocker drugs like metoprolol, carvedilol are available. These newer drugs are more effective, less toxic and having least side effects. So discuss with your doctor about starting metoprolol or carvedilol in place of Atenolol.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
