Suggest Alternative Medicine Of Levothyroxine

I have been on Levothyroxine for a few years with adjustments made here & there, as needed. I am noticing that I have put on weight recently & can not lose the belly pudge no matter how hard I exercise & watch what I eat. I m only 115 pounds, but still look bloated & like I m a few months pregnant. Are there any alternatives to Levothyroxine? I ve heard of Armor Thyroid, but didn t know how that works. Should I ask to be referred to an endocrinologist?

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hello,

Unintentional weight gain is an important symptom of hypothyroidism and for these reason I will suggest a TSH test to see if your Levothyroxine doses are optimal or not. Armour thyroid is a natural preparation derived from porcine thyroid glands and provide 38 mcg levothyroxine (T4) and 9 mcg liothyronine (T3) per grain of thyroid.

You should know that Armour thyroid can be a dangerous mixture because it can produce major coronary events and at the same time significant drug interactions may exist. I suggest to consult physically your local endocrinologist and discuss with him the risks and the benefits of natural and synthetic thyroid hormone replacement therapy.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Elona Xhardo, Endocrinologist
