Suggest Alternative Medication In Place Of Synthroid

I take Synthroid. My insurance company just informed me that they will no longer cover it effective 01/01/2017. Is there another thyroid medication that is an exact equivalent to Synthroid, that is not a generic brand? I have tried generics versions in the past and by they did not work for me as well as Synthroid.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You are having hypothyroidism probably as you are taking levothyroxine. According to your TSH, T3, T4 level, levothyroxine dose is adjusted. Generic drug levothyroxine is effective in hypothyroidism. And if TSH level can't be controlled by standard dose than levothyroxine dose needs to be increased.

After maintenance dose of levothyroxine is decided, you need to take levothyroxine life long if you are having hypothyroidism. Consult a physician or endocrinologist for examination with keeping all this in mind.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Parth Goswami
