Suggest Alternative Medication For Fenofibrate To Avoid Severe Side Effects

I was prescribed Fenofibrate 130mg to help lower my triglycerides. When the cost rose to $100 for a 30 day supply, my doctor changed the mg to 145. How is a higher mg less expensive and how is it possible to go beyond the maximal ml level? It s my understanding that the ml for this drug is topped out at 125??? Also, the side effects I have are constant lower back pain, shortness of breath, and stomach problems. Is there another drug that may be better in terms of side effects that is not a staten?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Fenofibrate is fibric acid derivatives and not a statin. It can cause GI side effects like dyspepsia; nausea; vomiting; diarrhea; constipation; abdominal pain; flatulence; eructation; increased appetite but not low backache or shortness of breath. Other drug in this group-Gemfibrozil. Omega-3 fatty acids, Nicotinic acid are also used for elevated triglycerides.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
